When most people think of “brain exercise,” they picture endless rows of black-and-white Sudoku grids, repetitive crossword puzzles, or dry memory drills. While there is nothing wrong with a good puzzle, protecting your long-term mental sharpness does not mean turning your free time into homework.

Enter the concept of cognitive reserve—your brain’s ability to improvise, find alternate neural pathways, and stay resilient against the normal wear and tear of aging (Stern, 2021). Think of cognitive reserve like an emergency savings account for your mind. The more diverse and stimulating deposits you make throughout life, the more cushion you have to handle changes later on.
