Health & Wellness #59: Rest ≠ Scrolling

After a long day, many of us reach for our phones or turn on the TV to “relax,” but zoning out is not the same as true rest. Real rest helps the nervous system settle.

Examples of real rest:

  • Sitting quietly without screens for 5 minutes
  • Deep and slow breathing for 3-5 minutes
  • Gentle stretching
  • Listening to calming music
  • Going to bed 30 minutes earlier
  • Stepping outside for fresh air
  • Taking a warm bath (without a phone nearby)
  • Standing or sitting on the grass or dirt without shoes/socks for 5-10 minutes

Screen time isn’t always bad — but if we still feel tired after hours of scrolling, our brain may not have actually rested. We may even be adding to our stress and fatigue.

This week, try one small shift:
Replace 10 minutes of scrolling with 10 minutes of intentional rest.

Try to do this daily, or as many days as you can remember. Notice how you feel. Rest is not lazy; it’s recovery, and our bodies need it every day.
